GENESIS
According to the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO), there are about 19 Million Disabled people in India
out of which the population of the Mentally challanged comprising of Mental Retardation (MR), Cerebral Palsy and Multiple
disabilities is estimated to be around 17% of the disabled population and 0.32% of the Total population. Around 82% of this
hapless populace is living in most inhuman conditions, deprived of every opportunity linked to their Socio-economic opportunity.
Tadipatri being an integral part of the country's one of the two acute draught prone district Ananthapur, 58%
of the rural population lives below the poverty line characterized by acute poverty, disease and deprivation. These Economically
marginalized and socially ostracized families are not capable of giving adequate care and support to the Mentally Challanged.
Having no coping skills, they find it difficult to manage the mental retardation and cinfine the child's future to the closed
room.
Conversant to the emerging needs of these God's Less privileged Children, Ananta Vikalangula Samkshema Seva Samiti
has initiated its activities in 1988 in Tadipatri, a small town belonging to poverty stricken, faction riddled, draught prone
Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh in South India. Its tenacious interventions linked to the Rehabilitation and Reintegration
of these intellectually challanged children have so far reached to more than 600 beneficieries. But due to resource constraints,
we have limited our ADL/Special School facility to around 25 Children while we are undertaking Community Based Rehabilitation
in around 5 Mandals forming part of Ananthapur District reaching around 32 hapless children belonging to poor and landless
laborers.
